We are excited to open registration for the FALL 2023 season of Newton Roller Hockey! Please read IN FULL for important information, EVEN IF YOU ARE A RETURNING NRH FAMILY.
PARENT SUPPORT/VOLUNTEERING: If you'd like to volunteer your time this season, there are many ways, large and small, to do so. Coaches and board members receive FREE registration for their children. If you are willing to volunteer just a little of your time, you will be eligible for a $20 discount. Please text me for the discount code. I can be reached at 973.270.7919.
NOTE: If you volunteered last season (including scorekeeping), you're eligible to receive the discount code, so please reach out to me for it.
TRY-OUTS: The start of the fall season is always weather-dependent, but we are currently planning to host a MANDATORY TRY-OUT for all players interested in playing on Atlantic (our intermediate division) this season. YOUR CHILD MUST ATTEND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, between 1 and 4 pm (specific start times will be assigned to each child prior to try-out date). No one will be cut from the league, but this formal try-out will allow coaches to evaluate all ATLANTIC-LEVEL players and create even teams. (Please contact me if you're not sure which division your child fits into.)
TEAM ASSIGNMENTS: Teams will be chosen and announced around Monday, September 11. Practices will begin that same week and the first game will take place on or about September 16. Please sign up as soon as possible so that we can get an idea of how many teams and divisions we will be able to have within the league. We will NOT be accepting late registrations this year as it creates too many complications in building teams. CURRENT SCHEDULE IS WEATHER PERMITTING.
REGISTRATION: Sibling discount of $25 per additional child for each family with two or more players. The sibling code is FALLSIB23 and can only be used for your second child (and third if applicable. If you are interested in coaching or serving on the board this season, please contact me to discuss and I will give you the 100% discount code (you must still register your child).
DIVISIONS: Typically, we have two competitive divisions, Atlantic (for younger players) and Pacific (for teens/older players), with three to four teams for each division. Ages 6 to 18 (up through 12th grade) welcome to play competitively. We will also have our Mites division (for new skaters ages 5 and up), but all divisions are dependent on headcount, so please register early and spread the word! All divisions play with a roller hockey ball.
DIVISION ASSIGNMENTS: Please remember, players are placed in the appropriate division based on age and ability. Division placement decisions are made only by the coaches. Please note, a child's division assignment may occasionally change during the season if warranted. All decisions are made to ensure that every player has an enjoyable, safe, and competitive experience. PLAYERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IN MORE THAN ONE COMPETITIVE DIVISION. If a younger player wants to try out for Pacific, he or she may play ONE game with Pacific. Coaches will then determine if player can join Pacific. NO OTHER PLAYING "UP" or "DOWN' ALLOWED AT ANY TIME.
EQUIPMENT: Full equipment is required (shinguards, elbow pads, helmet with full wire or clear face shield, mouthguard, and gloves, as well as cups for the boys), but we do have plenty in our shed, so please come check it out if you need some extra gear. First come, first served! If you have taken gear from the shed in the past, we do expect that you return it after your child has outgrown it. As always, new Mites program participants each receive a helmet and a stick.
MITES: The Mites Division is an instructional-only division, with sessions on Saturday mornings (time TBD). Though Mites typically targets ages 5 to 8, any child who cannot skate well or is new to hockey is encouraged to join this division, regardless of age (children as old as 12 may join Mites if appropriate).
GAMES AND PRACTICES: Each team will practice once a week on a weeknight (to be determined) and games will be on Friday and Saturday evenings. While we certainly support children participating in other sports besides roller hockey, WE EXPECT ALL PLAYERS TO ATTEND PRACTICES AND GAMES REGULARLY. Your child should participate only if he/she can commit to consistent attendance at games and practices in order to ensure the best possible experience for everyone. Please contact your child's coach if your child cannot make a specific practice or game.
SPECIAL REQUESTS: IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS A CERTAIN PRACTICE NIGHT OR HAS ANOTHER SPECIAL REQUEST, THIS INFO MUST BE SUPPLIED AT REGISTRATION. WE WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE REQUESTS MADE AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION.
Financial Hardship: If you would like your child to play, but you're unable to afford the full cost of registration, please contact me privately and we will do our best to assist you. We want every child to have a chance to play!
Please contact me, Andrea Lovas, via text or phone at 973.270.7919 or Dion Zappe at (508) 816-1047 if you have any questions or are interested in coaching and/or serving on the board. Thank you! We look forward to a great season!
